Hey there, savvy savers! Saving money doesn’t have to be a drag. With a few fun tweaks to your daily routine, you can start building your savings and reaching your financial goals faster than you think. Whether you're saving for a dream vacation, a rainy day fund, or just want to feel more secure, these ten playful yet practical tips will help you save money every month without feeling like you're missing out.
1. Track Your Spending
First things first, let’s find out where all your money is going. Think of it as a little detective work! Use apps like YNAB (You Need A Budget), or even a colorful spreadsheet to keep an eye on your expenses. You might be surprised where your cash is disappearing!
2. Create a Budget
Creating a budget might sound boring, but it’s actually like making a game plan for your money. List your income, jot down your expenses, and see where you can shuffle things around. Stick to your budget like it’s your favorite show – no spoilers, just a steady plot towards your savings goals.
3. Cut Unnecessary Expenses
Time for some spring cleaning, but for your wallet! Look at where you’re splurging and see what you can cut back on. Do you really need that third streaming service or daily designer coffee? Make it a challenge to see how much you can save by brewing your own coffee, making your own bubble tea or eating something in your freezer instead of ordering in.
4. Automate Your Savings
Set it and forget it! Automate your savings by setting up automatic transfers from your checking to your savings account. It’s like having a little money robot that ensures you save before you have the chance to spend. Plus, who doesn’t love a good robot helper? I do! I have automated my investments at Tangerine which is my favourite bank because of their no fee banking and low fee investing. I’ve also automated my investing at Wealthsimple which is my favourite robo-advisor service for investing because of their low fees.
5. Shop Smart
Channel your inner bargain hunter. Use coupons, price match, buy in bulk, and always shop during sales. Apps like Flipp, Honey, Rakuten, and CamelCamelCamel are your new best friends. They help you find the best deals and save money on things you’re already buying. Let the savings scavenger hunt begin!
6. Reduce Utility Bills
Lowering your utility bills can be a fun challenge. Try to use energy-efficient gadgets when possible and always use energy efficient light bulbs. Try turning off the lights and lighting some candles for instant Bridgerton vibes (Yes, I’m obsessed). If that sounds too risky go for electric candles, or an even better option is solar string lights. If you’re a parent, tell your kids if they leave the lights off you can all sneak around the house like secret agents. Another idea is to start a family competition to see who can take the shortest showers (lights on, of course). Every little bit adds up!
7. Cancel Unused Subscriptions
Do a subscription audit. Go through all your subscriptions and ditch the ones you rarely use. It’s like decluttering, but for your finances. You’ll be amazed at how much those little monthly fees add up when you’re not looking.
8. Cook at Home
Channel your inner chef and cook more meals at home. Or you can just learn a few recipes that you enjoy, and are easy to make, and make sure you always have the ingredients on hand. It’s cheaper, healthier, and you get to show off your culinary skills. Plan your meals, make a grocery list, and stick to it. And hey, why not turn it into a weekly family cooking night or enlist someone else to take over?
9. Plan Your Meals
Speaking of cooking, meal planning is your new secret weapon. Create a weekly meal plan and shop with a list to avoid those impulse buys. Planning ahead means fewer last-minute takeout orders and more delicious home-cooked meals.
I recently began ordering groceries for delivery. Yes there’s a delivery cost, but if I was going to order food from a restaurant anyway, then ordering groceries for many meals is a smarter choice for me. I save the time it would have taken to get the groceries myself and I’m not tempted by impulse purchases.
10. Find Free Entertainment
Fun doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Look for free or low-cost entertainment options in your community. Enjoy a walk in the park, visit the library, or attend local events. Get creative with your hobbies – from hiking to reading to DIY projects, there’s plenty of fun to be had without spending big bucks. I recently decided I want to learn how to play pickleball, and my first day playing is the most fun that I’ve had in ages. Of course I did purchase a pickleball set, I bought it on sale and it brings me the benefit of both exercise and entertainment, so I consider it to be a worthwhile cost.
Saving money can be a fun and rewarding journey. By incorporating these ten playful and practical tips, you’ll be on your way to achieving your financial goals in no time. Remember, every little bit helps, and the key is to stay consistent and mindful of your spending. Start today, and watch your savings grow with a smile!
